Welcome to The Modern Regulator

We’re glad you found your way here. Whether you work in regulation, alongside it, or are simply regulation-curious, this space is for you. We hope what you find here is insightful, thought-provoking, and above all, useful.

The Modern Regulator exists to explore the wide and evolving world of regulation – how it’s shaped, how it’s implemented, and how it affects real people in real systems. We take a broad view: our primary editorial focus spans Australia, New Zealand, and the United Kingdom, with frequent forays into the EU, Canada, the United States, and other jurisdictions. But many areas of regulation no longer sit neatly within borders. From artificial intelligence and cryptocurrency to space regulation and climate disclosure, the regulatory landscape increasingly defies geography. So too does our lens.

We are equally interested in the movement of people, professions, and policy across boundaries, from mutual recognition schemes and cross-jurisdictional licensing to workforce mobility and the global impact of local labour shortages. We closely track regulatory reform and legislative change, recognising that regulation is not static but an instrument of continuous improvement. And we also follow emerging regulatory issues and frontier domains where new forms of oversight are taking shape. Across all of these, our aim is to understand how regulation evolves and how it operates in real-world contexts.

Our editorial approach is grounded in the understanding that no facet of regulation operates in isolation. That’s why we explore regulatory systems through the intersection of people, processes, and technology. It’s a lens that helps us understand how meaningful change actually happens. We’re particularly attuned to the role of digital transformation in regulation, from cloud modernisation and system interoperability to licensing automation and online safety enforcement.

If you spend some time with The Modern Regulator, you’ll find stories that span an eclectic mix of topics. That’s by design. Regulation, after all, is the quiet machinery behind almost everything we experience as a collective society. We’ve published stories on climate risk disclosure, the rise of privacy torts, Botox and injectables, genetically modified foods, dog tethering laws, and cloud modernization. That’s only a glimpse. Regulation touches more corners of life than most people realise. We’ve also explored how regulators are adopting AI tools for public engagement, applying digital solutions to online safety enforcement, and introducing security-focused regimes for ground-based space infrastructure..

Our core audience is made up of regulators and regulation-adjacent professionals, including policy advisors, compliance officers, licensure officials, digital service designers, legal analysts, and many others. But our content is just as much for the people those professionals serve. After all, regulation is ultimately about public good. It shapes markets, protects safety, enforces rights, and maintains trust. They serve the public, often invisibly but always meaningfully.

I’ve been a journalist, writer, and researcher over the last two decades, covering politics, policy, technology, and regulation in all its forms. One thing I’ve learned: while regulation can sometimes feel buried in acronyms, clauses, and statutory language, it always comes back to real impacts. That’s why I believe in writing that brings clarity early; that helps decode the abstract and show what it all means, in human terms. That’s the sensibility you’ll find in our editorial team’s work, and in the work of our contributors: clarity, curiosity, and a deep respect for the complexity and importance of what regulators do.

You’ll find commentary from leaders in the field, interviews with practitioners, longform features, and ongoing news briefs to keep you informed and inspired – with just the right dose of added interpretation. Because it’s not just about what happened. It’s about why it matters.

Our team is excited to launch this project and grateful to the talented people that brought it to life.

We’re also humbled by the many brilliant regulators we’ve met through the years. They share a rare quality: they get it. They understand, behind all the technicalities and frameworks, why regulation exists. They see past the abstractions and into the heart of public service. They are a special breed.

If you count yourself among them, or you work beside them, or you’ve got something to say about how we can regulate better, reach out. We’d love to hear from you.
